Multimedia Software

As computers become more and more media-orientated, more and more free multimedia programs are released on the Internet. Here's a selection.

dbPowerAMP dMC - CD ripper and media converter
Created by Spoon

This is a powerful media converter that supports many file types. It uses the 'LAME' encoder to create high-quality mp3 files and you can download plugins for all other major file types. It is easy to use, has a lot of features (including auto-CDDB info retrieval), and works pretty quickly.

Quintessential Player - Media player
Created by Quinnware

As far as media players go, I have found none better than Quintessential Player (QCD for short).
It is fully customisable, supports a variety of plugins and skins, plays all the major file formats, includes a graphical equalizer, has options to keep the player in the system tray, and much more. It's also not a strain on your PC; it never takes up more than a small fraction of CPU resources.
